The research lines promote socio-legal reflection, international collaboration and social impact, enhancing global partnerships for collaborative research. The IISL creates this space as a common ground, bridging different perspectives in socio-legal studies, serving as a reference for the worldwide scientific community. If you want to conduct research in the socio-legal field and would like to have the occasion to exchange and co-create ideas with other people around the world, this initiative is for you.

Why the IISL?

The IISL, as a highly specialized and prestigious institution for the scientific community, serves as a scientific hub for teaching and training in socio-legal studies. The Research Lines articulate the trajectory of the institute, fostering exchange with the larger socio-legal community, for conducting research. The institute, created in 1989, has embraced values of diversity, democracy, human rights, community, and excellence. These and other values are part of the philosophy that inspires our international community as well as this plan. This plan cherishes our diversity as a community and will not limit the outlook of the institute nor any thematic exclusivity of the institute.

Who can join?

Anyone interested can fill the form and apply to be part of the research lines. It does not matter if you are undergrad, postgrad, practitioner or you want to contribute and exchange with other empiric or traditional knowledge.

Can I propose a research line?

If you don’t find that the initiatives relevant for the issues you are aiming for research, reach out at the Scientific Director, Camilo Umaña (c.umana@iisj.es). The strategic lines of research do not limit our interest in other areas of study!

When can I join?

In line with the IISL spirit of continuous dialogue and community-based exchange, we aim to keep the lines open to updates, integrations, corrections, and the exploration of new fields of inquiry. Possibly, different activities will have a time frame, but the general spirit is that it is a permanently open initiative.

What is the timeframe?

These lines will present their results by the end of 2026. This means that, for over a year, we will work collaboratively to achieve exciting outcomes and innovative approaches to many social challenges!

Why these topics?

In times of evolving global challenges, including the decline of democracy, the intensification of warfare, the penetration of technological advances, such as artificial intelligence, replacing human decision-making, environmental degradation, and the entrenchment of authoritarianism, the role of the institute must seek to understand the complex dynamics that underlie contemporary wars and armed conflict, institutional violence, and structural injustice.
