The IISL, in collaboration with the Provincial Historical Archive of Gipuzkoa, is hosting a temporary exhibition entitled “Repression, Distortion and Peace”, with the participation of the University of the Basque Country, Oñati Town Council, Gernika Gogoratuz and other institutions, at the Archive’s premises where the IISJ is currently based. The exhibition was opened last Friday, 13 March. The exhibition, which will run for one month, will bring together around 20 archival items, visual narratives, student research (with pieces provided by students on the IISL’s Master’s programme) and diverse voices to reflect on the socio-legal dimensions of war, justice and peace.
A central element of the exhibition is the inclusion of a mini-documentary on authoritarian regimes and information, with a particular focus on the Spanish dictatorship and the socio-legal mechanisms that enabled repression, censorship and control of information, using material from the Gipuzkoa archive. This audiovisual component has been produced by Diana Durán, a Latin American journalist who has worked for The Washington Post and Los Informantes on Caracol TV, as well as at Harvard University, and serves as a bridge between historical memory, contemporary debates on democratic resilience and the broader themes of the IISL’s Master’s programme in Legal Sociology. It will be screened during the exhibition’s installation, as well as during scheduled visits. It will also be made available for public viewing via YouTube.
The guided tour will be accessible to visitors through scheduled visits. Our aim is for the exhibition to reach visitors to the Archive, the IISL, and the residents and tourists of the town of Oñati.
The opening was presided over by the current scientific director of the IISL, Camilo Umaña, and attended by the rector of the University of the Basque Country/EHU, Joxerramon Bengoetxea; the mayor of Oñati, Izaro Elorza; the Deputy Minister for Justice, Alfonso Gómez; and the Director of the Department of Justice, José María Bastos, amongst others. About 50 guests attended the ceremony, which the IISL calls "an absolute success".
