EHU Module "Globalisation, the Economy and Sociology of Law"

This course examines the complex entanglement of law, global finance, and climate change. It explores how internationaleconomic law and financial systems, particularly secrecy jurisdictions and what this course terms regulatory havens, sustainenvironmental degradation and obstruct effective climate mitigation. Drawing from sociolegal and law and political economyperspectives, the course interrogates how legal and financial architectures enable the accumulation of wealth through ecocidalprocesses.
Students will analyze empirical case studies from the Global North and South to understand how corporations, investors, andother economic actors externalize environmental liabilities while concentrating wealth and decision-making power in the GlobalNorth. The course concludes by exploring possible strategies for dismantling regulatory havens and reimagining legalinfrastructures for ecological sustainability and climate justice.
