Deusto University exchange students visited the Institute

A group of American students participating in Deusto University's training programme for international students visited the Institute on 20 September. They took a guided tour and, together with the IISL's Master's students, they attended two seminars by Prof. Joxerramon Bengoetxea, who is also the coordinator of the Master's programme - one was about the demand for self-government from stateless European nations, and the other was about the EU's federal articulation.

2019 workshops
Art in prisons: talking restorative justice through artistic and narrative projects

04-05 Apr.: Art in prisons: talking restorative justice through artistic and narrative projects
Chairs: Gema Varona (UPV/EHU), Roberto Moreno (Dirección de Justicia del Gobierno Vasco), Lourdes Fernández Manzano (Abogada y Mediadora).

"We found more problems relating art and restorative justice to prison due to its dehumanising context. Historically many writers and other artists found in artistic expressions their way to scape and evade from that prison conditions. The challenge is to conceive art in prison (whatever form it adopts: music, sculpture, literature, painting, theatre, photography, etcetera) beyond therapy so that it can question social injustice and asymmetries of power. In any case, art as resistance or interpellation, without legitimising or banalising, should not be encapsulated as having a mission or function." [+info] [+Programme]

Climate Justice in the Anthropocene

02-03 May: Climate Justice in the Anthropocene
Chairs: Sam Adelman (University of Warwick), Louis Kotze (Northwestern University)

"In a highly interactive setting, the workshop participants discussed fourteen draft papers on the theoretical underpinning of climate justice, earth system governance, and climate change litigation. Selected papers from the workshop will be published in the prestigious publication series of the International Institute for the Sociology of Law." [+info] [+Programme]

Chairs: Riccardo Mazzola (Università degli Studi di Milano), Raúl Márquez Porras (Universitat de Barcelona).

"In the perfect settings of the Institute, we have had a very rich discussion. In terms of data and facts: we have found, again, that there is a need to ask the right questions, using the right methodology and the right definitions, in order to decide whether there is too much litigation: What is a case or a dispute? Who is a litigant? How much is “too much”? how do we measure the volume of litigation? We discussed the availability of data regarding the amount of litigation." [+info] [+Programme]

Publications

Oñati Socio-legal Series is now indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection

ESCI-Clarivate

We are delighted to share with you that Oñati Socio-legal Series has has been selected for coverage in the Emerging Sources Citation Index, maintained by Clarivate Analytics. Beginning with issue 7(1) and onwards, our journal will be indexed and abstracted in the ESCI.

Being in the ESCI will improve OSLS' visibility, is a mark of quality, and good for authors

The ESCI is part of the Web of Science Core Collection, and it was launched in 2015 to include high-quality, peer reviewed publications. It ensures important research is visible in the Web of Science Core Collection. As of 2018, the Core Collection included more than 12,700 top-tier international and regional journals in over 250 disciplines. The Web of Science Core Collection is, nowadays, unarguably one of the top indexing tools for scientific journals and books, as well as a seal of quality by itself.

Journals that are part of ESCI are carefully evaluated by independent experts. Citations from the ESCI are included in the citation counts for Journal Citation Reports, so they contribute to the Impact Factors of other journals. As part of the ESCI, OSLS is now discoverable on Web of Science with full citation counts, author information and other enrichment. These articles will be included in an author's h-index calculation, and they will also be in analysis conducted on other Clarivate products such as InCites.

Being in the ESCI will improve OSLS's visibility and provides a mark of quality, with the benefits that this brings to authors. As part of the ESCI, Oñati Socio-legal Series will be eligible for inclusion in the SSCI (Social Sciences Citation Index).

Having been selected for indexation in the ESCI is a great accomplishment for the Institute, and we wish to thank all of the authors, guest editors, and reviewers who have helped us fulfill this goal.

Oñati Socio-legal Series First Online

OSLS First Online

The Institute's SSRN profile is still active but is no longer being updated. Starting in May, we have a publishing space on WordPress, where accepted and edited papers are published as soon as they are ready and pending allocation in an issue of Oñati Socio-legal Series, or for as long as the issue is in production. These papers already carry a permanent DOI, so they will always be accessible by using this identifier even when they are published on the OSLS official site.

Collaboration with the University of Tübingen

The IISL has formalized a collaboration agreement with the Criminological Information Service (FID) of theUniversity of Tübingen. The FID has added the Oñati Socio-legalSeries articles to its repositories.

The Criminological Information Service (Fachinformationsdienst Kriminologie, FID) provides the scientific community with literature and other subject-relevant information on criminology as comprehensively as possible. The most important research tool for the literature inventory as well as for bibliographical references, is the database KrimDok.

Fundamental Rights and Legal Consequences of Criminal Conviction.Fundamental Rights and Legal Consequences of Criminal Conviction (Sonja Meijer, Harry Annison, Ailbhe O'Loughlin)

The legal position of convicted offenders is complex, as are the social consequences that can result from a criminal conviction. After they have served their sentences, custodial or not, convicted offenders often continue to be subject to numerous restrictions, in many cases indefinitely, due to their criminal conviction. In short, criminal convictions can have adverse legal consequences that may affect convicted offenders in several aspects of their lives. In turn, these legal consequences can have broader social consequences. [+]
