Letter from the Scientific Director

Adam CzarnotaAnother academic year is over in the IISL in Oñati. It has been a very intense year. In the Institute we have 19 students from different parts of the world. Since 1 April we host 16 workshops plus 3 bilkuras. The year was indeed very busy.
Enrolment for next year has been successful and the Institute will have excellent master students.
For me it was the last year in Oñati as the academic director.  Professor Vincenzo Ferrari will take over the directorship from 1 September 2016. I wish him successes in his term in the office and also realisation of his plans. [+info]

We thank Professor Czarnota and the superlatively attentive Malen Gordoa Mendizabal. The beauty of the IILS and it amazing support provided the perfect mix of inspiration, beauty and stimulation." "IISL-Oñati is good place with good people. Really fantastic conditions for intellectual work. During my stay I was able to work on the theme of conflict in a democracy - democracy which is constituted and supported by the erosion of the criteria of certain, associated with temporariness and uncertainty.
[...] It was a huge pleasure and joy to be here. And I will miss Oñati. I felt here even better than at my own city.

"Return to Basque Country.
I have found an intellectual home at IISJ.  As an Indigenous person the welcome is especially meaningful, for our scholarship is often unrecognised in the struggle to regain our sovereignty, freedom and voice.  After having spent three months here in late 2015, I return to Basque Country, and IISJ, to learn how the cultural strengths and practices of traditional communities underpin food tourism that contributes to national economies.
