Why do a PhD?

Remember that a PhD will take at least 3 years to complete, and in most cases longer, and so you need to stay motivated. A PhD also often involves considerable sacrifice, such as giving up a good salary, steady job, regular working hours, time with your family, and so you need to think about the reasons why you want to do a PhD in the first place.

Do a PhD

Do a PhD if you are really interested in the topic, but also if you feel that you can cope with the challenge, are prepared to work hard and do not give up in the face of adversity. Do a PhD if you want to learn and develop your understanding of your field, you want to improve your research skills, and you have a thirst for knowledge.

Don’t do a PhD!

However, if you feel that you know everything about the topic already, then a PhD may not be for you. Don’t do a PhD simply in order to keep your visa, escape from a bad job, or because it is expected of you.

While it is true that most universities now expect academics to have a PhD, having a PhD is not a guarantee of an academic post. If you want an academic career, you also need to consider what else you may need to add to your CV, such as publications and teaching experience. A PhD is also not necessarily the best step if you want a higher paid job or a promotion. If your main goal is to make money, go into business, don’t do a PhD.
