A new issue of the IISL's online journal, Oñati Socio-legal Series, is online on the journal's website. This is the first extraordinary number of the year, and it delves into the notion and current experiences of direct democracy. The issue, entitled El reto de la profundización democrática en Europa: avances institucionales en democracia directa (The Challenge of Democratic Deepening in Europe: The Role of Direct Democracy), has been edited by Víctor Cuesta López (University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) and Miguel Presno Linera (University of Oviedo, Spain).

In the introduction to the monograph, the editors explain that "the papers collected in this issue offer different points of view on the opportunities and the challenges faced by the institutions of direct participatory democracy in contemporary constitutional states. Never questioning the legitimacy of representative governments, we start out from a dynamic conception of democracy, which sees the citizen’s direct participation in public matters as a means of increasing democracy".
