I am working on a monograph on the history of the EU's expectation that Member States respect the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights. Why, how and when did that expectation emerge? Which instruments has the EU developed over time to try and guarantee that respect?
I have done research in the Archive of the EU in Florence in 2019, especially regarding the 1960s and 1970s.
I have published papers in English and in Dutch on the period 1957-1973 and 1997-2004 in the European Law Journal, the International Journal on Constitutional Law and the Tijdschrift voor Constitutioneel Recht.
In 2021 I will finish the draft of the manuscript. I intend to write the chapter on rule of law conditionality in the post-2004 enlargement rounds in Central and Eastern Europe in Onati. The institute's library has some very good books and journals on this. Apart from that I will benefit from the quite and wonderful research environment. I have stayed at the Institute twice before during Adam Czarnota's tenure as director to work with him and others on an international grant application.
