I would like to thank the IISJ for providing me with a Residence Grant to make my stay in Oñati possible. The Institute was an inspirational and supportive place for me to research and write during my three month stay.

I research the relationship between housing activism and law, and my PhD thesis will focus on the King Hill Hostel Campaign, a direct action campaign by homeless families in Kent, England, that took place in the mid-1960s. Since I approach this project from a socio-legal perspective, the IISJ library’s extensive collection of books and journals specialised in socio-legal studies was a very helpful resource for me. Perhaps because the library is so tightly focused, I particularly enjoyed browsing the stacks, which were full of helpful material.

My stay was a wonderful opportunity to work in an environment surrounded by researchers and students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and at different stages in their research and careers. Whether learning about my colleagues’ work through presentations at the Institute or discussing methodological challenges and theoretical concepts over dinner, I have appreciated the intellectually engaging atmosphere here. The town of Oñati, with its picturesque plaza and vibrant community, is a wonderful place to live while researching and writing. This stay invigorated me, allowing me to make significant progress with my thesis and providing me with further questions and ideas to explore in the future. Thank you to everybody working at the Institute and the Residencia, and to the visiting scholars, master’s students, and other Residence Grant recipients for everything!
