First of all I would like to thank the board of the Oñati International Institute for the Sociology of Law for the opportunity to spend time in the wonderful village of Oñati, the library, and the Residence. It was a great opportunity to be back in the Basque Country where I had done fieldwork in 2008 for my research on the challenges of criminal prosecutions in contentious episodes. It enabled me to verify information, discuss some of my findings with people here, and continue writing on my dissertation. The library was a great resource bringing together books that are relevant to the sociology of law from many disciplines and on a wide variety of topics. For example, the library enabled me to update a course I teach in Amsterdam on the interaction between political violence, criminal justice, and conflict resolution.
I had the opportunity to present my work during a workshop at the Residence where the students asked critical questions and the director offered helpful insights. I discussed not only the methodological side of my research, as well as some of my findings, but also the ethical questions one faces while doing field research on a sensitive topic.
Life in the Residence was a very special and truly multicultural experience as I lived together with the Master students from all over the globe: from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, Chad, Poland, Russia, Italy, Turkey, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina.
I would like to thank everyone for making my stay in Oñati a beautiful experience!
