He completed his PhD in political sociology at Lancaster University in the 1990s, where he worked under the supervision of Bob Jessop. He taught at Lancaster for a few years before returning to Canada where he worked as a sessional lecturer in the Department of Law at Carleton University. Having competed his PhD in 1999 he secured a tenure track position at Carleton where he has been teaching since.
